Common Causes of Breathalyzer Failure

Breathalyzer tests have become the most commonly used method among law enforcement professionals for determining whether an individual is driving under the influence of alcohol. More reliable than traditional sobriety tests, breathalyzers are intended to provide an objective, definitive standard for catching drunk drivers. Unfortunately, these tests do not always provide accurate results.

Breathalyzer failure is an all too common problem, and the consequences that an individual may face as a result of inaccurate breathalyzer results can be serious. For this reason, it is essential that drivers be able to understand the different issues that can impact breathalyzer analyses so that they may more fully understand their rights under the law.

Issues with Breathalyzer Tests

There are a range of different problems that can affect breathalyzer test results. Some of the most common issues with breathalyzer tests include:

  • Inaccurate machine calibration
  • Deviations between results of individuals of different weights
  • High concentrations of alcohol in breath affecting blood alcohol content measurements
  • Food items, such as salad dressing, being mistaken for alcohol

These are just some of the many different issues that can result in a wrong or misleading breathalyzer test result.
