Austin reports a 16% decrease in DWI arrests

The Austin Police Department in Texas has reported that there are a significantly decreasing number of people who drink and drive in the area, a welcome development on the heels of the South by Southwest.

Police officers have stated that they have put measures in place such as “no refusal” and “Arrive Alive” programs to ensure that this year’s SXSW celebrations are far safer than last year’s had been. Representatives also state that ride-sharing programs like Uber and Lyft may have also contributed to the drop in incidents. According to APD DWI enforcement chief Lieutenant Keith Walker, the number of DWI arrests dropped by 16% in 2014 from 2013 levels, while the number of DWI crashes dropped by 23%.

While it is great news that incidences of DUI and DWI are decreasing in Austin, criminal defense attorney Ian Inglis understands that mistakes do still happen.
