The Austin Police Department has reported that 127 arrests were made over ten days in December during a No Refusal initiative, a program designed to curb intoxicated driving during the holiday season. The individuals arrested were taken into custody for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Out of the 127 arrests, 48 of those individuals consented to a breathalyzer test, blood was taken with the consent of 14 individuals, and 65 warrants for blood draws were ordered and processed. The No Refusal initiative affords police the ability to file for a search warrant in order to obtain blood samples from anyone suspected of driving under the influence who refuses to consent to blood draws or breathalyzer tests. The initiative ended at 5:00 on the morning of January 5, 2016.
