New system to enforce gun removal from domestic violence offenders

County officials in Dallas are working to launch a new system to effectively remove guns from domestic violence offenders, KHOU.com reported on July 2.

A private gun range near Love Field volunteered to store the estimated 700 to 1,000 confiscated weapons per year. Under state and federal law, domestic violence offenders are not permitted to own a firearm. However, Criminal Court Judge Roberto Cañas said this is something that Dallas County has not sufficiently enforced in the past.

Now, judges will more thoroughly investigate the likelihood that offenders own a gun and insist upon its confiscation. This program is expected to be enacted by September.

In addition to confiscation of a firearm, domestic violence charges pose serious personal and professional ramifications.
